When is recombinant luteinizing hormone supplementation beneficial during ovarian stimulation?
A successful outcome for assisted reproductive technologies (ART) is greatly influenced by optimal ovarian stimulation. In the unstimulated cycle, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) play a synergistic role in steroid production and folliculogenesis. Exposure of the theca cells to LH leads to production of androstenedione, an essential substrate for its conversion to estradiol by granulosa cells. In contrast, in cycles where exogenous gonadotropins are employed, the requirement and role for LH is controversial, including the role of recombinant LH (rLH).
