Change in patient attitude towards multiple gestation pregnancies and selective fetal reduction over 20 years
With the introduction of assisted reproductive technologies (ART), the rate of multiple gestations has increased. Complications associated with multiple gestations including preterm birth, low birth weight, maternal hypertension and diabetes, and postpartum hemorrhage have also increased. Advancements in the field of ART in the last 20 years, including guidelines limiting the number of embryos to transfer and the increased use of single embryo transfer, have reduced the incidence of multiple gestations, although twin pregnancies are still fairly common.
