BONUS EPISODE: HEAR WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS YEAR’S FERTILITY SHOW

This year The Fertility Show is opening on Friday night so you can go after work and learn more about fertility MOT’s, egg freezing, having a natural cycle, treatment abroad and solo motherhood – so I caught up with Managing Director Laura Biggs to chat about what’s in store.

Also Urologist Jonathan Ramsay spoke to me ahead of his seminar on Investigating Sperm on Saturday 2nd November.

Jonathan Ramsay and colleagues at Imperial and at the Lister Hospital have been looking at the relevance of measuring the DNA quality of a man’s sperm since original research on this topic, published more than 10-years ago. More recently, we have begun to appreciate that sperm can be damaged, as it travels through the genital tract – a long journey for a tiny sperm.  This damage is often caused by ‘oxidative stress’, and now we can measure this phenomenon to help us to direct and choose antioxidant treatments.  However, there are different types of DNA damage, and some of these are not so easy to treat – we are beginning to understand these differences, so that we can decide whether interventions (such as varicocele treatment) will be effective.
