Fertilization and embryo development are complex biological processes that depend on genetic and epigenetic contributions from both spermatozoa and oocytes. It stands to reason failure to conceive during assisted reproduction cycles could result from male factors, female factors, or both. However, determining whether or not infertility is an “egg issue” or a “sperm issue” in couples pursuing assisted reproduction was rendered less critical by the development and widespread adoption of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) over the past two decades.
