Semen characteristics and pregnancy loss: an important step in addressing a complex problem

Semen characteristics and pregnancy loss: an important step in addressing a complex problem
For couples attempting to start or grow their family, pregnancy loss can have a devastating impact both physically and emotionally. Miscarriages occur in as many as 30% of pregnancies, and for approximately 50% of these losses the cause is unknown (1). With such high incidence of a relatively poorly understood condition, it is imperative that studies directly identify various aspects that may correlate with, or directly affect, this condition in both the male and the female partner. Such a contribution to the field is found in the new study from Eisenberg et al.: “Semen quality and pregnancy loss in a contemporary cohort of couples recruited before conception: data from the LIFE study” (2).
